Most people learn from an early age that the best way to become successful is to set goals, and then to work hard to reach those goals. While this system of goal-setting and achieving may breed excellence in some cases, it neglects to consider an important question: do your goals align with what you really want?
Focus On Pleasing Yourself
Most goals are set to impress others around us. This is true from a young age – children are taught to seek the approval of adults, parents and teachers alike. As we grow up, we continue to set goals that are focused on meeting expectations and pleasing others. Then, we spend our lives working hard, spending hours in an office and losing sleep, trying to achieve these goals. The result? A lack of happiness.
The key to happiness and success is to make sure your goals focus on pleasing you rather than those around you.
Shift Your Priorities
Stop prioritizing hard work and goal-setting. Instead, take a backseat to both of these tasks, and focus on what you really want in life. Why are you working 60 hours a week? What will you achieve at the conclusion? Why do your goals matter so much to you? If you don’t know the answer to any of these questions, it’s time to rethink your goals, your work, and how you define success.
