Discourage Flattery To Be A More Effective Leader

A leader needs to know when he or she is about to make a poor decision. Being surrounded by people who only flatter you is not going to serve you well in your leadership ability.

On the one hand, you want to take the advice of those you are leading. But on the other hand, people start to lose respect for you if everyone can tell you the truth as it is.

Whom do you trust to pick you when you fall?

A Leader Balances Counsel With Unwarranted Advice

A prudent leader needs to allow the influence of trusted sources. He or she must also seek the counsel of selected mentors and colleagues. The operative word here is ‘selected.’

Only the selected few should be given the privilege to correct, point out blind spots, and give advice even when the leader hasn’t asked for it. These are the people you trust to spot and reveal your blind spots. They are the ones who will prevent you from driving into a ditch that you cannot see yet.

A wise leader learns to guard against flattery while also drawing boundaries against unwarranted advice. 

Encourage Disagreeing Viewpoints

How open are you to receiving feedback from your employees and colleagues? Are they too afraid to speak up and challenge your views?

Start encouraging people to disagree with you. Teams work best when there is a culture of disagreement that does not lead to conflict. 

Go a step further and reward the people in your company who are willing to speak up. When they notice something is going wrong, most people prefer to remain tight-lipped. It takes courage to speak to leaders about change when something is not working out.

The worst situation you can find yourself in is when you believe everything is going great but the ship has already started to sink.
