How do you facilitate change?
In his book, “How Change Happens,” author Duncan Green suggests that overcoming stubborn and stable structures requires an understanding of how power works in these structures. Power in this context is defined as the control one person or organization has over someone else’s actions, resources, and thoughts.
It seems like most people with good intentions of positive change misunderstand these power models:
There Is Power Within All Of Us For Change
Every individual has a certain level of conviction that they have the right to benefits and power.
Most people tend to point fingers at those in power and accuse them of discouraging the changes required for progress.
Therefore only a minority of individuals are able to translate the ‘power within’ to the ‘power with.’
There Is Greater Power In Working With Others
An empowered member of the community or company spreads his or her convictions to convert the ‘power within’ to the ‘power with.’ This individual is effective in facilitating change because he or she understands the power of support from other members with similar ideas of change.
So rather than criticizing, they build change from the bottom-up. Because they know it takes effort to work together as a team, they focus on developing the power structures with the group.
With Support Comes The Power To Make Change
Finally, the power within a a group turns to ‘power to’ do something. As a result people start to feel empowered to make choices and pursue the decisions that lead to lasting change.
