Repeatedly asking the question, “Why?” might remind you of a persistent five-year-old child but it is an important part of analyzing the real issue behind an obstacle.
Identify The Root Cause Of A Problem
Start by writing down a specific problem you are facing. Describe the problem to help you focus on the real issue.
Next, ask “Why” this problem occurred (or occurs if it is a recurring issue).
Apply a similar “Why” approach to the new statement you just wrote down.
Repeat this process until it is absolutely clear what the real issue is. It might take less or more than five “Why” questions.
Here’s an example of using this principle in your personal life…
Problem: You are once again staring down the barrel of an ended relationship.
- Why did you break up with your partner? Because I was not happy with the quality of the relationship.
- Why were you unhappy with the quality of the relationship? Because my partner stopped paying attention to me.
- Why did your partner stop paying attention to you? Because he stopped being interested in me.
- Why did your partner lose interest in you? Because I have been really busy and haven’t had time or energy to invest in the relationship lately.
You might stop at this point and notice that the root cause if your busy schedule and the lack of quality time in the relationship.
