# 1 Listen And Let Silence Facilitate The Negotiation

Always allow the other person to go first. Let them state their terms and considerations first. Then give them space to think over what they just said. Never be in a hurry to counter with your terms.

Listen, show respect and understanding and after a period of silence, make your terms clear.

 

Have flexible strategies to suit the game

#2 Change Your Negotiation Angle

If things don’t work out, quickly change your angle. Remind yourself constantly of the goal in your mind.

What are you trying to achieve? Bring this goal back into focus and try a different angle to get to this outcome.

Treat your negotiations like a game of chess. You will be constantly presented with an ever-changing board of options. Play your pieces according to the tactics of your opponents.

 

#3 Be Willing To Walk Away

The greatest point of negotiating is the ability to walk away from a deal. Never let the other party see your desperation. If you are unhappy, be willing to walk away from the table. For practice, try haggling with any street vendor in South East Asia and the Middle East. Your terms for a bargain will only be considered once you walk away from the vendor.

In a corporate setting, let the other party know that you are willing to walk away and show them you mean it. Given some time, if they are serious about negotiation a deal, they will get back in touch with you to restart the negotiations.
