Develop A Calm Mind By Changing Your Destructive Emotions Into Constructive Emotions

All humans experience five fundamental emotions – fear, anger, sadness, disgust, and enjoyment.

These emotions are an automatic response of the brain and they can either be constructive or destructive.

Constructive emotions improve the current situation and destructive emotions make the situation worse.

Emotions are natural. And they act as signals to an underlying issue.

Take sadness for example… It’s okay to feel sad when someone close to you passes away. But it’s unhealthy to slip into depression and stop living your life because a close family member died.

So how do you end up with a calm mind when your emotions seem to be destructive?

Build your awareness.

Identify Your Emotional Triggers

Start by identifying the triggers that initiate an emotional reaction.

For instance, suppressing frustration at work might lead to sudden and unwarranted bursts of anger at home. Or you might be angry with yourself for making a mistake and lash out at someone else instead.

While being annoyed by a situation is a mild response, expressing fury is an extreme response.

How you react to a situation makes a mild emotion into a destructive one.

Understand Your Emotions To Maintain A Calm State

Emotions tend to cloud our judgment and make it difficult to choose the appropriate response to a situation. Stepping away from a situation and giving yourself time will help you make better choices.

A work colleague who constantly shows up late to meetings could easily trigger your emotional response of anger. But trying to understand the background might reveal that she is always running late because of the demands placed on her by a mentally challenged child. In this case, her being late has nothing to do with you despite your ego telling you so.

The solution to avoiding such misunderstandings? Change your destructive emotions into constructive emotions.

Love is a powerful antidote to anger and it can only be cultivated with practice and through reasoning.

And the result of constructive emotions is a calm mind.
