What Your Dreams Mean When You’re Going Through Tough Times

Why do we dream when we are struggling?

Do they help identify the source of our anxieties or do they show us a way out of our struggles?

There are multiple theories trying to explain why we dream. But there is no conclusive proof to support a single theory. According to some researchers, dreams do not have meanings. They are simply a reflection of images we may have captured during our waking hours.

Whether you are having nightmares of a missed flight, the death of a loved one or of simply falling, here are some indications of what might be happening in your subconscious:

Are your dreams trying to tell you something?

Dreams Can Be A Visual Representation Of Your Mind

If you are dreaming of running from someone, it is quite possible that your fight or flight response is being manifested while you sleep. The body releases cortisol (stress hormones) and you wake up in a state of panic. If it is a person who showed up in the dream (your boss or spouse, perhaps) then it is likely you have some unresolved issues in your relationship with that person.

When your body is at rest, your mind continues to process images related to where your attention has been during your waking hours. The connections made in your subconscious mind can be a visual representation of a situation that you are unwilling to face in reality.

Rather than paying attention to the whole dream and looking for outcomes of predictions, observe the setting for the dream. Are you at home or at the office? Who are the main characters in your dream (or nightmare)?

If a pattern repeats, you can start drawing conclusions. Often, dreams point us in the direction we believe we should take but they could also just be a jumbled representation of our messy thoughts.

Having a daily mindfulness practice will make you aware of these unchecked thoughts a lot better than your nighttime visual representations.
