The 3 Best Exercises for Relaxation

Exercise is a great way to alleviate stress.

Exercise is great for your mind and body. And while exercise can reduce stress and be very soothing, it can also release adrenaline and cortisol, both of which do not have a calming effect. Three great exercises to perform when you need some stress release and mindfulness are:

1. Yoga

Yoga is by far one of the best exercises to relax stress, as it is non-intensive, focuses heavily on breathing, and engages the whole body. Yoga is also very mental and mindful, requiring the participation of brain with body.

2. Walking

One of the best ways to alleviate stress and get in a great workout is to go for a walk. Not only is the act of walking in itself great for you and your brain, but walking outdoors is particularly beneficial. Studies show that walking outdoors has a measurable effect on stress. If you’re feeling tense or need to clear your head, try to go for a walk in nature, especially if the sun is out.

3. Swimming

If you know how to swim, putting this skill to use by performing slow, steady laps in a pool (again, aim for outdoors if possible) is great for you. Because swimming blocks out nearly all sound and sight, the activity in itself is very meditative. Swimming is also a great workout.
