OODA Loop Follow-up: Act
The OODA loop refers to a process by which actors observe a situation, orient themselves, make a decision, and then act. Throughout the week, our posts have focused on the first three components of the OODA loop – Observe, Orient, and Decide. Today, we’ll be focusing on the action part of the loop.
Act: Action and Learning
After an actor has weighed the different mental concepts and made a decision, they must act on it. However, the loop’s creator is clear in that the act part of the loop does not just refer to taking action, but also to learning from that action. Indeed, once an act has been carried out, the actor must reflect on it to determine whether or not the outcome (and our perception of what would happen) was correct. If not, behaviors and actions may have to be adjusted, and the actor should go through the OODA loop steps once again.
Testing and Re-testing
Ultimately, you should be able to test and re-test a variety of mental models, and ideally at the same time. Of course, this will not always be possible. However, this is your chance to be creative and experiment with different options for what works and what does not work. For example, if you are trying to introduce a new product, rather than launching 100,000 items of the product, you might want to start with a bunch of smaller, test batches and see how each one fare.
Do you use the OODA loop for making decisions and garnering success?
