Whatever your job, your relationships with others or your personality, there will be times in your life when you encounter tension and stress. In many cases, this stress is foreseeable; dinner with the in-laws, a meeting with your boss, or a big presentation can all be stressful. Here are some ways to prepare yourself for tense situations so that you are equipped to handle all the energy in the room effectively:
1. Be Aware of What May Go Wrong
If you know that a tense situation is coming, you probably also know why it makes you tense. Consider the example of dinner with your in-laws above – if your mother-in-law often critiques you for your cooking, this could indeed be the catalyst to set you off. Take a moment to foresee the potential negatives, and be prepared to combat them.
2. Have a Plan
Put a plan in place for what you’ll do in the event that, as suggested, something goes wrong. Your mother-in-law brings up your cooking… how are you going to handle it? In many cases, simply leaving the room is not an option. Instead, try breathing exercising, repeating a mantra in your head, changing topics, or even accepting and embracing the negativity, and then moving on from it.
