Psychologists have identified five general personality traits, which they believe all personalities can be deconstructed into. The following provides a review of each of the big five, and a challenge for you to spend some time thinking about each, and which qualities of each you may or may not possess. Then, think about how identification with one or more personality trait may affect your perspective–
1. Openness
The personality trait of openness means that a person is open to new experiences and opportunities in their life. This personality trait is also used to describe someone who is original and creative.
2. Conscientiousness
Those who fall within the category of conscientiousness are hard-working, well-planned, and very aware of their behavior. These people tend to be natural leaders, and have higher rates of success.
3. Extroversion
Being an extrovert doesn’t just mean being the life of the party; rather, those who are extroverted like to have fun, be in social settings, and are very friendly. Like those who are characterized by conscientiousness, extroverts are also likely to be leaders.
4. Agreeableness
Everyone likes an agreeable person, who is someone who is kind, affectional and generally easy to get along with. These people tend to be some of the happiest among us.
5. Neuroticism
Neuroticism is typically regarded as the least desirable personality trait to have, as it is characterized by feelings of insecurity and worry. These people tend to be more temperamental, too.
