Jim Collins, the author of Good To Great had to make a life-changing decision at the age of 35. He had to choose between a comfortable teaching position at Stanford University or a career as a self-employed professor and author. After consulting with his mentor, who advised him not to leave any options open, Collins quit his job and pursued the project that turned into a global bestseller.
The mentor advised Collins that having a safety net (going back to Stanford if all else failed), would, in reality, be a negative value. Having options seems like a safe proposition but it can also prevent us from fully engaging with the risk we are about to take.
Cut Your Safety Nets To Avoid Quitting
When Hernán Cortés and his band of 500 men landed on the coast of Mexico in 1519, he promptly ordered his men to burn the ships. The message was loud and clear – there was only one way out of this predicament – capture Mexico for the King of Spain.
Retreating is an easy choice when you have options.
Although this sounds like a drastic measure, people engage all their faculties to come up with solutions when their backs are against the wall.
The simplest way to sabotage your goals is by adding options.
If option A fails, there is always option B. The trouble with this type of thinking is that option A never gets the full attention and effort it deserves if there is the availability of a fallback option.
Take decisive action. Life has a funny way of working out when you have the courage to take bold risks to improve your life.
