Understanding how to control your own emotions, and how to be emotionally intelligent, is very important in a business setting. Without knowing how to regulate your emotions, disaster can unfold, from bouts of depression to listlessness to confrontations to lack of empathy.
Expressing Emotions with Restraint and Control
There is no doubt that, as a leader, there are time when you are both elated and exhausted, thrilled and frustrated beyond words. Rather than letting those emotions get the best of you, though, it is important that you learn how to express emotions with restraint and control. Doing so shows a level of maturity, and is much more effective at getting your point across than is an outburst.
Know Your Own Emotional Triggers
When you know your own emotional triggers – i.e., what really sets you off or gets you going – you can be on the lookout for it and have a plan in place for what to do when you encounter an emotional situation. This will allow you to be more flexible with your emotions. Knowing your own emotional triggers requires a great deal of self-awareness.
Not only is regulating your own emotions important, but knowing how to respond to the emotions of others is equally as critical.
