When Was the Last Time You Took a Day Off?
When was the last time you took a day off? And I don’t just mean by not going into the office. When was the last time you didn’t think about work, didn’t answer your phone, or didn’t reply to a work-related email? If you can’t remember when that was, it is time to take a day completely off from work.
Why You Need a Break
When you make work your whole life, you fail to prioritize other things that are important. Checking your email all the time or having your phone glued to your hand sends the message to other people in your life – like your spouse, friends, or kids – that you are emotionally ‘unavailable’ for the time being. It also sends the message that work is more important than your relationships with these people.
Working all the time is also bad news for your health. Just like the rest of the muscles in your body, your brain needs rest and recovery. If you are constantly stressing about work, your brain doesn’t have time or energy to recharge.
How to Take a Break
Okay, you know you need to take a break, but do you know how? Start by letting your co-workers know you’ll be unavailable for the weekend. Then, turn your devices completely off. Store them in a location where you won’t be tempted to reach for them. Spend the time to yourself, with your loved ones, and in a relaxed state. Exercise or meditate, eat well and enjoy!
