This struggle occurs because we are constantly battling the chatter in our minds. Buddhist monks refer to this state as, “monkey mind.”
There are several reasons why your mind is racing and agitated – worry, too many commitments, painful memories from the past, and current distractions. Here are a few ideas to slow down your mind and practice mindfulness:
Practice Mindfulness Daily
Our daily commitments leave us no choice but to be constantly on the move. So we forget to slow down and focus on what truly makes us happy.
Do all our material possessions add considerable happiness to our families? Rather than focusing on what others claim is important (chatter), we need to focus on what makes our lives better. Mindfulness helps us align our lives with our core values.
Make meditation a habit and prioritize it over your other commitments.
Be Comfortable In Silence
At the end of a hectic work day, there is nothing more automatically soothing than turning on the TV or radio to drown out the chatter in our minds. But these background noises add to the chatter rather than reducing it.
There’s nothing wrong with listening to music or watching TV. The problem arises when we turn them on simply as background noise.
Try turning off the TV and radio (or other devices that add noise) when you are doing something else. Focus on what you are doing and be present in the moment. The silence will calm you down and you will find yourself enjoying the task even more.
