Your success in achieving your goals is largely based on how well you define the goal at the start.
There is a big difference between, “I want to lose 5 Kg,” and “I am aiming to become a stronger, leaner, fitter person.” The former is a tick-box option while the latter is a lifestyle preference. You have to form a habit to achieve both but the latter attitude defines your goal for long-term success.
To design this desired version of your self, start by writing a mission statement. This can be a sentence or a brief paragraph to clearly define the principles describing the person you want to become.
How To Define Your Professional Or Personal Mission Statement
Follow these four steps and write a mission statement that defines what you are trying to achieve:
- Give your current professional situation a rating between 1-5.
- What changes need to happen in your professional life to make the rating a 5?
- Now phrase those changes as a characteristic of your present self. For someone who wants to be a writer, a professional mission statement looks like this: “I am a well-respected and reliable writer who publishes one book every year.”
- Finally, write down what changes you need to make in your current situation to make this desired self a reality.
Defining your mission statement is the first step. Over the next few days, you will read on this blog how a defined mission statement will help you formulate actions steps to achieve long-term success with your goals.
