One of the most difficult conversation to have with a friend is the one right after they lose a close family member. We start expressing our condolences with the best of intentions. But what helps the grieving person most is just your presence.
We can ruin that precious moment with our well-intentioned but meaningless words.
The same is true for a disagreement with a spouse. At the end of a fight, your calm presence will heal the wounds much faster than the well-crafted defense of your behavior.
How do you maintain and demonstrate a calm presence?
Presence Is Energy
What is the energy you exude daily? Your energy is a result of your thinking patterns and your daily habits.
You can practice being calm. But if you are constantly in a state of agitation and anxiety, staying calm is a tall order.
Combine a daily mindfulness practice with a habit of reflection to understand what you are struggling with.
Once you have cultivated a strong and calm energy, you will need fewer (or no) words to communicate your presence. All you have to do is let your energy shine.
Presence Requires Understanding
Anytime you have a disagreement with a person, stop yourself and ask this question: “What does this person need right now?” Often, the answer is simply “understanding.”
If you show that you understand a person’s situation, that’s half the battle won. People want to be listened to, not told that their reasoning is flawed. Or have their life situations explained to them.
