A recent article in Forbes states that those people with a higher emotional intelligence (EQs) are higher performers, make more money and are better able to focus their energy than those people with low EQs. But they also found that unless people are genuine and authentic as well, emotional intelligence is fruitless. Here are six habits of authentic people to pay attention to and start developing in yourself:
- Be Yourself
Authentic people are happy with who they are; they are not focused on trying to get people to like them.
- Be Generous
If you’re not giving back whatever it is you have to offer – a talent, knowledge, etc. – and not just to your friends, but to whomever needs it, you should work on improving your generosity.
- Do Your Thing
These people are authentic are trendsetters who forge their own paths, not people who take a road already traveled.
- Be Respectful
Yes, authentic people are respectful, and not just to their superiors but to everyone.
- Be Trustworthy
A genuine person is one who can be trusted.
- Be Present
Finally, an authentic person will pay attention to you and be present in the moment, not focused on something else that’s going on. If you have a tendency to let your mind wander, try refocusing.
