Thousands of years ago, survival was the main purpose for humans. Now that we have gained a certain level of mastery over our environment, there are more important issues to pursue. Advancing new ideas and being a change maker is risky business. You need to push through the pain of ridicule, hostility, and pushbacks.
Risk Requires Skin In The Game
When you assume risk related to your strategies, decisions, and actions, you have literal skin in the game.
A famous investor who is close to Elon Musk describes the innovator as someone who ‘puts everything on the line to make his vision come true.’
A CEO is likely to perform better if most of their wealth is tied up in the success of the company they lead.
An indication that you are doing what you should be is when you stand for something and you are willing to be harmed for it. In other words, you are intellectually, reputation ally, even physically liable for the direction your purpose takes.
How often do you encounter a man who is willing to risk his life and reputation to stand by his ideals?
Recreate The Risk That Helps You Thrive
Throughout human existence, struggling for survival in an uncertain environment gave us purpose. Nobody had time for an existential crisis. But now that things have changed, we still need some level of risk to help us thrive. We can recreate the conditions by using risk as a form of purpose.
The modern world with all its comforts would never exist if people in the past had not taken risks.
