The general solution to improving a skill is to practice, practice, practice.

But simply performing an activity or carrying out your work responsibilities daily is not going to cut it after a certain point.

A teacher who has been teaching for fifteen years must be better than one who has been teaching for four years.

But this assumption is, in fact, a myth.

Research shows that once a person reaches an acceptable level of performance and automaticity, the additional years of practice do not lead to improvement.

Be Deliberate And Purposeful With Goals

When you are purposeful, deliberate and specific with your goals, improvement is a natural outcome.

Start by putting baby steps together and break down your long-term goals into tangible daily actions.

Be Focused On Your Actions

Focus on your actions and avoid slipping into automatic mode.

Each goal should take you out of your comfort zone and stretch your current abilities.

Being present in the moment, engaging all your mental faculties and paying full attention to your tasks leads to better performance.

Get Regular Feedback Through A Coach

Avoid falling into the try harder trap. The best way to overcome obstacles and challenges is to view them from a different angle.

This is one reason why it is useful to work with a coach, someone who is already familiar with the type of challenges you are likely to encounter.

A teacher or coach can save you years of “trying harder” in the wrong direction by offering solutions and insights to put you back on track to accomplishing your goals.
