Growth is a result of taking ownership of the choices you make in life. You have to be aware that the decisions you make are in your control.
There is always a linear path that can be traced back from an event to the decision you made that either caused that event to happen or for you to be in a place to be affected by it.
Victimization Is The Opposite Of Ownership
Taking ownership of your actions is the opposite of playing the victim role. In every circumstance that did not work out well for you, there is a role that your decisions played to make it happen.
We blame our bosses and colleagues for traumatic work experiences while ignoring the fact that we decided to be there in the first place. It’s the same for traumatic relationships that we knew all along were not good for us. We stay because there is something about us that drew us into these circumstances in the beginning.
What was it that you needed from these situations?
Whether it was a relationship where you felt disrespected, a friendship that led to betrayal, or a job that sucked the life out of you, you need to also take responsibility for your role in creating those situations.
Yes, we do allow toxic people into our lives sometimes because they offer us something we need at that moment. There is no shame in these lapses of judgment. We all make mistakes.
When those unhealthy alliances end, ask yourself why you allowed them to happen. What could you learn about yourself from that experience? How could you shape a better future for yourself?
Real growth happens when you stop blaming other people and start taking ownership of your decisions.
