Are Your Problem Solving Skills Situational Or Strategic?

You are constantly forced into making decisions every day. Some are important and others are trivial. You are either responding to situations or being consistently strategic in your decisions and actions.

Life is situational. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to the numerous challenges we face. So we are constantly assessing the situation and responding to it based on our experiences.

We talked on this blog about using mental models to tackle repetitive obstacles.  We also frequently encourage strategic habit-building.

Is there a clear distinction between the two?

Do you have to choose to be fluid and take life as it comes? Or should you be strategic and have an action plan to chart your course through life?

How agile is your business strategy?

Is It Better To Be Strategic Than Fluid & Dynamic?

Modern companies are aiming to be more agile in their operations. There is also a growing trend among career professionals towards being generalists rather than experts.

The changing demands of a connected environment put extra pressure on individuals to adapt faster. So there is a lot to be said about situational responses. You react to a situation based on the current conditions.

However, to have the ability to respond to situations, you first need to accumulate knowledge and expertise in multiple areas. And the way to accomplish this expertise is through being strategic.

A general manager might not have specific functional knowledge. But he or she would have demonstrated previous expertise in a specific domain to achieve their position. In other words, they did not aim to be a general manager but worked their way to that position through expertise in (for instance) communication and negotiation skills.

Start with a strategic action plan.

Focus on an area and build habits to maintain consistency.

Over time and with experience, you will have the capacity to draw knowledge from various sources.

You will have the ability to make situational choices in life only when you have trained yourself to be strategic. In this stage, you will no longer be reacting but responding with agility to all situations.
