Why Your Worth Is Not Determined By Your Work
You are not what you do.
Your self-worth should not be determined by your performance at work. Your ambition and job is separate and does not encompass your value as a human being.
You can decide if you want external situations to dictate your self-worth. Or you can decide that no matter what happens, your inner state is completely in your control.
To Be Happy Despite The Circumstances
When you give a goal or task the power to determine your happiness and worth, your inner locus of control is affected by external circumstances.
Under these circumstances, your stress levels rise and you start to feel anxious. This anxiety is induced by the uncertainty of future outcomes. You are focussed on the future instead of taking action in the present moment.
Ask yourself, “What can I do now?”
Bring the attention back to what is under your control. The only thing you can do to change a future outcome is to take action in the present moment.
When your stress levels rise, your breathing becomes shallow and the brain receives less oxygen than it needs. This is another reason why your stress levels rise.
Take a deep breath. Exhale. Repeat.
You have the power to choose your internal state. And you have the power to choose the attitude towards your work. Instead of saying, “I have to do…” start saying, “I want to do…”
Because in the end, you are not your work. Your worth is not tied to your performance.
