One of the hardest balances to strike in life is that between work and play. While work often feels like the most necessary thing to do – after all, money is necessary for life – play shouldn’t be disregarded. In fact, “play,” which can include spending time with loved ones, exercising, indulging hobbies, and relaxing is essential to well-being. Here are some tips for making sure you get a good balance of each:
1. Get Out
Whether you need to travel to a new country to get your fill of adventure, or you just need to get out of the office and head around the block to a new coffee shop, getting out is one of the best ways to find balance. Getting out and seeing new things and going to new places is one of the best ways to challenge your brain, fulfill your demand for adventure, and get a fresh perspective on things.
2. Take a Timeout
Another way to give yourself a rest from work when you need it is to schedule “timeouts” for yourself, where you stop thinking about and focusing on work. During the workday, these timeouts should be short – five minutes of meditation here, a 15-minute walk there. On the weekends or at home, though, these timeouts should be prolonged, lasting hours – or sometimes even days – on end.
3. Make Work Play
Work does not have to be all work and no play – how can you make your job more stimulating and enjoyable? Consider taking on a new work project that you are very interested in or tackling a challenging task. Engaging your co-workers in social hours or games – like an employee ping pong tournament – can also be very rewarding.
