Christmas and the holiday season have evolved from beloved holidays that focus on charity, time spent together, family, and gratitude to big, commercial traditions where people spend more time thinking about gifts than they do about the most important things in life. Which is why asking yourself what the holidays really mean to you is an important thing to do this time of year. Are you really focused on what matters most?
Peace, Abundance, and Gratitude
The holiday season should be about the feelings of peace, abundance, and gratitude. In fact, the holidays are a time of celebration, and as such there should be joy in the ability to spend time with family, self reflect, or give back to those in need. Serving and altruism are huge themes of the holiday, yet these are values that have been lost in the current hustle and bustle of the holiday season, and the fixation on decorations, the perfect party, or an expensive (and worthy) gift.
Take Time for Reflection
The holidays aren’t about having a tree, putting up lights, or even giving gifts. As recently stated in an opinion piece in The New York Times, “The idea that our affection and esteem must manifest itself in yet another sweater is reductive.” There are more important things in life aren’t purchased; stop frantically worrying about what you will or can buy.
Instead, take time for reflection in your life. Star thinking about what the holidays really mean to you, and whether or not those values are being demonstrated in your actions. What can you change?
What will you prioritize this holiday season?
