How To Make Meaningful Small Talk In The Office Or In Business

Whether you are the CEO, a manager or a new employee on the rolls, the art of small talk is necessary to make people around you feel comfortable.

However, most people hate small talk. To allow small talk to lead to bigger conversations.

How do you ensure that small talk is not stifling and awkward?

Is your body language open and inviting?

Be Interested In Others

The golden rule for great conversations is, “Be impressed. Don’t try to impress.” The point of your conversation should be to feed your curiosity about the other person and not to show off your amazing personality.

To be an interesting person, you have to be interested. So start by showing an interest in what your companion is telling you and ask them questions. And then, listen carefully. 

Ask Open Questions For Interesting Small Talk

Everyone’s favorite topic is… themselves. People love to talk about their lives and you should give them an opportunity to do so when you meet them. Asking ‘how,’ ‘what,’ and ‘why’ questions is a great way to open up a conversation to deeper topics.

“What do you mean by that?” is a better way to perpetuate conversation rather than making assumptions and showing your knowledge.

Stick To The 20-Second Rule

During the first 20 seconds of talking, the listener is paying attention and enjoying the conversation. But unless you are a gifted communicator, talking for more than 20 seconds will lead to the perception that you are a ‘talker,’ and makes you appear boring.

Think of the 20 second mark as a yellow light for you to switch the conversation to your partner. Small talk is better when the conversation flows from one person to another like a tennis ball floating over the net between two players.
