Between 1998 and 2012, Apple dominated the technology world with not just one innovation but several gadgets that were leaders in their own class. From Macs to iMacs and then iTunes, iPods, iPhones and eventually iPads, each new golden gadget entered the limelight while the previous innovation was still throwing knockout punches in the ring.
As a result, Apple created a halo effect around its products. A user would be more likely to adopt the entire Apple range and not just one product.
But the focus was always on a single product line. In other words, the company was clear on its ONE thing – the gadget that was at the center of their attention for that year.
Focus On One Thing But Don’t Discount The Rest
There can only be ONE most important thing at a time. In the midst of the many things you do, there can be only one thing that takes prominence. Apple did not rest on its laurels after releasing a game-changing product. They moved on to the next ONE thing.
In business (and life), it is important to keep your focus on your ONE thing. And as you develop your company, that one thing might change. And at each step, you need to be clear about what that one thing is.
But as you grow, it is important not to relegate your other products and services to the discount table or remove them from your portfolio.
With each new gadget release, Apple continued to refine the older products. This constant refinement ensured that a user would have no hesitation in adopting the Apple product family.
Gain clarity on your core values and be clear about your ONE thing. And create an environment in your company (and life) where your ONE thing can exist and improve while you transition to the next one thing.
