Emotional empathy allows you to see other people’s pain. An empath is a person who is highly sensitive and attuned to other people’s moods. They are good listeners and tend to be spiritually open.
The brain scans of an empathetic person are similar to the brain scans of the person they are expressing empathy toward. Being in sync with another person’s emotions makes them more visible to you.
Empathy is not a fixed train. It can be cultivated.
Empathy Begins With Understanding Our Own Emotions
When we collaborate with other human beings, we reflect their feelings. Empathy acts like a social glue. It can be developed with discipline and practice.
But to recognize and understand other people’s emotions, we first need to recognize and understand our own emotions.
See Other People’s Pain
We often look down and stare at our smartphone screens instead of making direct eye contact with other people. To express empathy requires being in sync with the other person and that is only possible when you maintain eye contact with them.
To see someone’s pain, you have to look at them with your full attention.
Empathy is not just feeling someone’s pain but to see their pain.
In other words, being empathetic requires looking at others through their lens, not your own.
When people practice being empathetic towards each other, they start seeing each other. At this point, collaboration and trust soar.
To truly understand each other, you do not need to read someone’s mind. You just need to understand the depth of their feelings.
