Food affects performance.
We are all aware of this fact and yet we struggle to make the right dietary choices. We feel it intuitively – our body responds well to healthy food and tends to get sluggish when we consume more processed food.
To help figure out the food-mood connection, an experiment was conducted and the findings of the research study were published by the British Journal of Health Psychology. In the experiment, participants reported their food consumption, behaviors, and mood over a period of thirteen days. Researchers discovered that people who consumed up to 7 portions of fruits and vegetables daily were far more engaged, happier, and creative.
Nutrition Affects Happiness And Creativity
The authors of the research study offered several reasons for their conclusions.
The vital nutrients in fruits and vegetables foster the production of dopamine in the body. This neurotransmitter plays a key role in motivation, curiosity, and engagement. As a side effect, they also reduce inflammation by providing antioxidants to the body. The result is an improvement in mood and memory.
It is important to note that not all foods are also processed by our bodies the same way. Foods like carbohydrates (pasta, rice, cereal, and bread) tend to release glucose quickly. They provide an instant burst of energy, followed by a slump. High-fat meals (cheeseburgers) provide a more sustained source of energy but they also require the digestive system to work harder, which in turn reduces the supply of oxygen to the brain and makes us feel sluggish.
The study underscores the importance of making intelligent food choices to improve your performance in the workplace.
