There are days – or sometimes weeks or months – when a workload becomes excessive and increases significantly. When this occurs, knowing the best practices for managing a busy workload is an essential part of being productive, accomplishing the work, and staying positive and well-balanced. Here are some tips to help:
1. Know What Needs to Be Done
Write down exactly what needs to be done, and the priority of each item. As you complete each task, mark it off. This is satisfying, and helps you to stay on track.
2. Take Small Breaks, But Avoid Distractions
Taking small breaks to stretch your legs, refuel, and recharge your brain is great for your physical and your mental health. However don’t let breaks become distractions. For example, use your break time to walk around the block or eat a healthy meal, not obsessively check your Facebook.
3. Reward Yourself When It’s Over
Work hard, but take pleasure in a job well-done. Finish everything that needs to be completed, and then reward yourself. Take a long walk, pour yourself a glass of wine, cook a well-deserved meal or just relax and catch up on a good book or favorite show. Don’t overeat or drink though, as this can drain your energy and leave you ill-prepared to tackle upcoming projects.
