When we jump to conclusions and make judgments about people, we fail to build deep connections with others. You could be a people-oriented person and still find yourself keeping them at an arm’s length. To change this common human tendency, the best we can do is:
#1 Commonalities Help You Connect Better
Ask questions that inform you of your companion’s lifestyle and quickly find what you have in common. When you find yourself interacting with someone who gets pretty close to how you see yourself, the connection flows smoothly.
#2 See Others How They See Themselves
Feeling misunderstood is one of the most common reasons people shut down in their communications. Instead of trying to convince others of your worldview, suspend your reality to engage in how others see the world.
The closer you get to understanding why another person has a certain belief or lifestyle, the closer you get to actually understanding them.
#3 Validate & Value People
When someone feels that you genuinely care for them, they will open up to you on a much deeper level of communication. To get to that place of trust, you need to first validate them and make them feel valued. If you followed steps #1 and #2, the next step is to let the other person know that their existence is somehow important to the grand scheme of things.
