The word ‘coach’ brings to mind all sorts of memories and expectations. Who is qualified to coach another person on how to live their life and run their business?
Coaches Don’t Really “Coach”
Pick a coach who is interested in your development.
Don’t get stuck on the word. Us coaches don’t really do that much coaching in the traditional sense of the word. At least not in the way you think it should be.
What people imagine instead is more of a life or business consultant – someone who tells you what to do. In contrast, coaches do not have trendy models and prediction algorithms that make your decisions easier in the present. Instead, they draw on their skills in guiding a conversation to explore the answers you already have inside you but need to be teased out.
It is not necessary for a life or business coach to have had the same struggles you are facing to guide you through them. They may not have walked your path but they have sufficient experience and skills to empathize with you and then keep you accountable to growth. If you are looking for someone who has already walked the path you are about to take, you might need a mentor more than a coach. Although most coaches have the experience to mentor others, they rarely advise clients on following the path that they themselves have taken.
Because coaching is uniquely focused on the client’s unique journey.
Coaching Draws The Solution Out Of You
Who knows what works best for you?
You!
So why would you want to listen to someone else for answers you already know?
A coach understands the human logic and how people think. It is their job to help you move past all the objections and obstacles that you are creating in your mind. And they will help you create a way forward that is authentic to you. Not something that worked for someone else. They will collaboratively help you set goals that are in line with your own beliefs, values and current situation.
In life, there is no one right answer. We all follow different paths to reach the destination that we each predetermine as our destiny.
A coach is interested in your personal growth. They care about your success. And they are willing to accept that they do not have all the answers. But they will help you see honestly where you are stuck and where you need to go. Then together, they will help you craft the path to that destination.
Finally – they believe that change is possible for you.
If you have decided that coaching is a waste of your money and time then I cannot help you past that limiting belief.
But if you read this far, something in you acknowledges that you could benefit from the help of someone who cares about your growth and is willing to challenge your assumptions on the way to a better future.
