Read on for some simple tips you can apply to your own life today.
Practicing compassion is a great first step on your journey toward learning to thrive like the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama has described compassion as “human business ” and “a question of human survival.”
How do you show compassion?
Start by reaching out to others who might be in need. Be patient when people disappoint you and acknowledge that everyone is on their own journey. Extend this grace to yourself, too. If you’re constantly beating yourself up, how are you going to show compassion to others?
Don’t just think about others. Take your compassion one step further and act. Look for ways to be of service and make the world a better place, both for those you know and those you’ve never even met. Help your neighbor shovel their driveway, donate to a charity, take someone’s cart back to the cart return at the grocery story. You’ll be amazed at how fulfilling these small acts can be and how they will bless your own life.
Take Time to Reflect
If you’re always on the go, you’ll have a hard time achieving your goal of thriving like the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama encourages everyone to set aside some time each day, even just a few minutes, to pause, reflect, and meditate. When you do this, it’s easier for you to be present throughout the day. This, in turn, makes it easier for you to find opportunities to give back, practice compassion, and make the world better.
Take Time to Meditate on the Solution
When he’s facing difficult decisions he has said he’s going to go and sit and meditate. He says that the chanting and meditation are the vehicles that help him find the most compassionate solutions. Insulate yourself from all things that are ugliness and focus for a time on the beauty of creation, humanity and what good is possible and you’ll find new solutions. These new solutions are often game shifters.
Limit Technology Use
Despite having millions of Twitter followers, the Dalai Lama encourages everyone to limit their technology use. Are you always glued to your phone or computer? If so, try to set aside some time each day to unplug. Get out in nature, read a book, meditate, or find new ways to serve. You’ll be amazed at how much extra time you have when you reduce your screen time.
Care for the Earth
According to the Dalai Lama , we all share a “sense of universal responsibility for both mankind and nature.” Caring for the Earth is a great way to show compassion and make the world a better place for everyone. There are lots of ways to care for the earth. For example, participate in community cleanups and gardening activities. Look for small changes you can make in your day-to-day life, too, such as recycling or using reusable grocery bags.
