There are way too many people talking about purpose, yet it’s a fuzzy concept. When you think of purpose, let’s take a step back to some basics. Purpose is when you have something in mind that “needs” to get done, and that’s one aspect of purpose. The next aspect of purpose is to achieve the goals of the day. Then, we go on from here to the one that has everyone stressed.
That would be the overall life purpose. Fact is, you want to look at life as a multi-purpose party. Or in the words of Florence Scovill Shinn and The Game of Life book prosperity, “Many people are in ignorance of their true destinies…”The point is, we are so often caught up in the “shoulds” that we don’t know how to listen to our intuitive and higher knowing self. This leads us to trying to fulfill other people’s purpose that we have adopted. Purpose is when ask for the “right circumstance,” which leads to the “right action,” and then leads to the greatest rewards. Our purpose is often right in front of us and may be a tiny part of what we’re already doing. Here are a few reasons to tap into your intuitive.
Purpose Pays
There’s an author from the early twentieth century, Jim Collins. He was a visionary and truly spent a life of working on himself so he could be receptive to the intuitive nudges of his purpose. Turns out, this method his companies outperformed in the marketplace by 15x and how “conscious capitalism” companies outperformed by 8x or more. Boston Consulting Group surveyed the leaders, employees and customers of 50 companies. They broke the companies into two groups – those with high purpose scores and those with low purpose scores. They found that the high purpose group had twice as many top-performing companies (as measured by total shareholder return).
More Evidence That Purpose Pays: Aspiration and Pivots of Purpose and Priorities
More and more leaders are committing to deliver on the “triple bottom line” of people, planet and profit. These leaders are striving to have a positive impact on the world and leave a legacy. At the same time many workers, especially millennials, are seeking workplaces that are an inclusive community working together to make a positive impact on the world.This is another way purpose pays. Purposeful companies attract an engaged and talented workforce. These companies do not have to compete solely on pay because they offer more than a paycheck to their team members.
Transformation Always: Be Ready For A New Methodology And Opportunity
Disruption is a hot word these days, but one of the best disruptors is consistency of transformation. Staying true to your right direction and north star is the greatest asset to purpose and profits. It allows always transforming companies to not lose what made them great in the first place.
The Carrots And Sticks
Today’s small businesses need to realize the limits of carrots and sticks to motivate their tribes. It’s imperative to appeal to their people’s heads and hearts. Studies have shown that our incomes, once above certain levels, have little impact on joy in our life but getting to the place where you do have certainty and feel truly prosperous requires a formula that is designed to how you can break through your own non-risk taking mindset and habits. Deep down, every good person wants to make a positive impact on the world. Purpose-driven, mission fueled start-ups, small to mid size businesses meet their financial and aspirational goals all in one place.
Tribe Connecting In a Digital World
More and more business is done over the internet. Many alliances, clients and team members will never meet face to face, but only through video chat. Yet, we all still crave to connect, commune and be part of a tribe. Organizational and most importantly the founder, CEO, leader, small business owner, start-up’s purpose can make these digital connections more meaningful because everyone on the team is striving to accomplish something bigger than “just business.” The more clear the purpose and values creates and maintains a sustainable culture in a digital world and a system that helps people connect and collaborate will make that tribe more solid and have the ability to be sustainable.“
