Leverage refers to raising something heavy in a specific manner to make it easy to lift.
Over 2000 years ago, Archimedes famously stated that ‘given a lever long enough and enough distance, he could lift the earth’.
Like other mental models, leverage is an idea used by humans for thousands of years to gain disproportionate strength. In ancient Egypt, levers were used to lift stones weighing hundreds of tons, to build the pyramids.
How Businesses Use Leverage
Companies often use this tactic to create leverage with their products.
Buying a beverage or food at the airport and on an airplane will always be expensive. This is because people lack other alternatives in these situations.
Similarly, YouTube subjects users to advertisements because the service is free and hence they have full control over the program.
The only way to escape this type of leverage is to create other options and be aware that these companies have an advantage over competitors.
You might have a great product and fantastic service line in your company. But without leverage, you will need to work extra hard to convince people to buy your product.
It is almost impossible to force people to change their long-held beliefs and opinions. It is much better to find common ground and work your way from there. Also, you can find leverage to make people listen to you.
