The beginning of wisdom lies in the acceptance of one’s ignorance.
The truly wise ask a lot of questions.
That’s what the great teachers in history did. That’s what the great thinkers of modern society do. If you want to learn, begin by asking insightful questions. Or, as Socrates did – question everything.
Although definitions of what constitutes wisdom might differ, there are universally accepted notions of what it’s not: Impatience. Rushed. Ego-driven. Anxious. Frantic. Busy. Productive.
Panic doesn’t solve problems and hasty action results in a lot of damage control later on.
Ask Inner Questions
Question yourself and find answers within.
Go places that make you feel uncomfortable. Ask yourself why that situation or circumstance makes you feel uncomfortable.
Accept new challenges. Widen your perspective.
You will notice that nothing is as bad or embarrassing as your mind makes it out to be. Your brain requires resistance to grow. Expose it to new ideas. Train it to accept new perspectives.
Never believe that you have found the answers or know it all .
Be Patient In Your Pursuit
Things become muddy first.
There is a storm of confusion before the stillness of clarity.
Stay humble and keep walking through the unsettling process of re-arranging your worldview. In the midst of all the uncertainty, the experience you gain will give you confidence to take the next step.
Confidence allows you to set your own standards. It releases you from the chains of expectations set by other people – there is no need to prove yourself. You are no longer paralyzed be the fear of disagreement and change. It leads you to admit that you can also be wrong. As a result, there is no need to defend yourself or fight when someone attacks you.
Instead, confidence allows you to stand your ground when you know the answer and inspect what others are offering as a different perspective. You then have a choice to change your opinion or simply continue on your course with no action required.
When you are able to separate your actions from your identity, you begin to act with confidence.
Wisdom Is Detachment
Detachment is attained when we detach an idea from an outcome. It’s when a person delivers a public speech with no thoughts of how it will be perceived, attacked, or received by the audience. It’s when a hitter steps in to bat with no expectations of hitting a home run.
Like anything else in life, the more you desire wisdom, the more attached you are to the outcome, the more elusive it becomes.
Be patient.
Deep understanding is the reward of the truly patient. And patience is a practiced virtue.
When you develop patience, you are more likely to stick to a course of action despite obstacles. A calm mind cultivates inner peace. And in the midst of peace, confidence builds. These are the conditions that are requisite for wisdom.
Wisdom is making mistakes and learning from them.
It requires an openness to learning from others to avoid making the mistakes they made.
But above all, wisdom is the ability to see reality and understand how this world truly functions.
