How to Make a Habit Stick

people talking
Changing routine and forming a new habit is very challenging to do.

Forming new habits that really stick, and become part of your lifestyle and routine, can be hard to do. Luckily, there are some proven ways that you can develop new habits, and make new behaviors a part of your life. Try the following tricks for making a habit stick:

1. Create a Reminder

A reminder is a thing that reminds you to take the action that you are trying to form as a habit. For example, if you are attempting to take a 30 minute walk every day, an example of a reminder is an alarm on your phone that goes off first thing in the morning and a notification that reads, “It’s time for your walk!” Reminders about what you are supposed to do help you to remember and keep you accountable.

2. Perform the Action

You cannot form a habit if you don’t actually perform the action you want to develop into a habit (i.e. you cannot become a frequent walker without actually going for a walk). When you get your reminder, the next thing you need to do is get up and do the action. Skipping the action throws you off, and can be a set back in changing behavior.

3. Reward Yourself

Humans perform well when they are rewarded for good behavior rather than punished for bad. Rather than withholding a treat for yourself because you didn’t go for a walk, tell yourself that if you do go for a walk, you will feel better, lose weight, be healthier, etc. The benefit that you attach to your habit is entirely up to.

What habits would you like to form?
