We all know people in our lives who we love and who love us, but who may be extremely negative or go through periods of toxicity. While it can be easy to distance ourselves from these people during this time (or sometimes, even for an extended period of time), doing so is not always the best choice. While you should never allow your energy to suffer as a result of someone else’s toxic behavior, some things that you can do that are positive and will promote the health of the relationship and the person include:
Have an Honest Conversation
Rather than avoiding a person you care about because their toxic behavior is taking a toll on you, you should have an honest conversation about your feelings. This should not be an opportunity for you to blame the person, which will only make them defensive. Instead, say what you want and be honest in your feelings.
Listen and Be Flexible
If you truly care about the relationship, then you will listen to the other person with an open mind and be flexible in your opinions and the plan moving forward. Try to strike a compromise that allows the person to say how they feel, and even consider the possibility that the reason they have been acting in a toxic and negative manner could have something to do with how you’ve been acting.
Treat How You Would Want to Be Treated
The Golden Rule is too often forgotten – treat others how you would want to be treated. This means that you should speak with compassion and kindness, no matter how frustrated you may become.
