To become a successful person, you have to say, “yes” to many opportunities. But when you reach a certain level of professional success, saying yes can drown you in a mountain of opportunities.
Maintaining your edge requires a shift from setting your priorities to setting appropriate boundaries.
In other words, learning to say, “no” to a lot of tempting opportunities.
How do you know when it is right to say, ‘no’?
Say No To Things That Don’t Excite You
When an opportunity does not excite you to the core, let it go. Take a cue from Derek Sivers who will give something a shot only if his initial response is, “Hell yeah!” Otherwise, he lets go of opportunities.
Let go of things that you are less enthusiastic about. Instead of becoming busy by taking on too much, start removing the things in your life that no longer excite you. When you say, “no” a whole lot more, it creates space in your life for the things that you are truly passionate about.
Follow Your Gift
You have a unique gift, a skill that you can do better than your peers. Think of it as the reason you have been placed on earth. What is that gift or skill? Are you doing what only you are uniquely capable of doing?
If someone else can replace you (and do a better job at the same task), you are most likely squandering your unique ability.
Say “no” to things that are lucrative but do not excite you or engage you in your full capacity. Do the things that have the biggest impact, the things that only you can do which will make a difference to the world you live in.
