A cognitive bias represents a systematic flaw in thinking that influences a person’s worldview. The resulting thought patterns affect the judgements and decisions made by people.
There are two main reasons why we use cognitive biases: limited attention and memory.
Attention is a limited resource so the use of cognitive biases help people to be selective in what they pay attention to. A person’s memory colors a number of factors which results in biased decision-making and thought patterns.
Left unchecked, these biases can have a negative influence on how we think about and treat other people.
Causes Of Cognitive Biases
Despite its complexity, the human brain is limited in scope when processing large amounts of data. In an attempt to simplify the massive amount of information available, the brain relies on biases. These biases help to make sense of the world and make decisions with speed.
Going through every single choice to make a decision would results in analysis paralysis (or inaction). So it is sometimes necessary to depend on mental shortcuts and act quickly.
If you are in a life-threatening situation, your biases will help you escape the danger.
Although cognitive biases seem to be rational decisions, they often lead to poor judgment and bad decisions. These negative biases are caused by individual values, emotions, society, and old habits.
