Time is a limited resource. The minutes you waste today cannot be regained.
Unlike other resources, time cannot be compounded over time. You get a fixed amount and if you fail to use it wisely, you feel like there are not enough hours in the day to do the things you need to.
The goal is not to become better at managing your schedule. The goal is to value your time.
Here is a simple method that you can employ to achieve this goal:
Place A Monetary Value On Your Time
Decide on how much an hour of your time is worth to you.
If you have a regular income, this is a simple task. Simply divide the amount you earn by the number of hours you work. If you have a variable income, decide on a number that you would like to get paid for an hour’s worth of work.
Now that you have a monetary value attached to your time, ask yourself if an activity is worth spending that amount on. Watching Netflix for two hours now puts your time into a better perspective. You’re not paying $8 a month to subscribe to Netflix, you’re paying ‘x’ amount of dollars by investing your time.
What about work-life balance?
There are activities that are worth your time – playing with your kids, hosting a dinner party with close friends, spending time with a loved one, walking through a park in solitude to gather your thoughts. These are all worthwhile activities that you would ideally indulge in often.
When you value your time, you will start to make better choices on how you spend it.
