When faced with difficult emotions, our natural tendency is to avoid feeling them at all costs. But what if we trained ourselves to accept feelings and thoughts without judgment?
It offers us a sense of fluidity when we stop attaching meaning to every misfortune and unpleasant incident in our lives.
Self-compassion is a trait that is most common among effective leaders. To be a leader requires a high level of self-empathy.
When you learn to go easy on yourself when you make mistakes, it is less likely you will commit the same mistake twice. Learn to accept and love yourself despite your failings.
Replace Judgment With Action
When you are faced with unpleasant emotions, there are two steps to handling them.
Feel the emotions and allow yourself to be fully present in the moment. Without overreacting, acknowledge your emotions. However unpleasant they might be, admit that you are experiencing turbulent emotions. Give the feelings a name.
And then move towards valued behavior.
What are your values? What are you doing to live in-line with your values?
This results in a positive, uplifting spiral. By adopting this approach, you get a step closer to understanding the truth of the situation.
Face unpleasant emotions and let them pass.
Decide on what to do the next time these unpleasant emotions occur.
