Science is proving that in the case of human personality, you can actually teach an old dog new tricks. It is possible to change who you are with the right inspiration and habits.
The fundamental question behind any change should be – why?
When it is crystal clear that you need to change an unhealthy personality trait, you will find the answers and the change process is likely to be successful.
Is It Your Personality Or Your Preference?
Often, when we talk about change – we refer to preferences.
Notice how you are sitting right now. It is likely that you adopt this same sitting position most of the time.
When you fold your arms – notice which arm goes above and which one goes below.
Or when you put on your shoes – do you start with the right leg or the left?
These habits are preferences shaped over years of repeating the same movement.
Our personality is also shaped over years of repeated patterns. To change one of these patterns requires a combination of inspiration and grit.
Ask Yourself ‘Why’ You Need To Change
First – why do you need to change a personality trait? Are you introverted and noticing that all the opportunities are going to the extroverted people around you? Perhaps you are a big-picture person and losing out on promotions because your job requires attention to detail.
While these are valid reasons to change your behavior, you have to ask yourself if it is absolutely necessary. Over time, the introverted person who gains energy from being alone will start to feel exhausted by the demands of constant networking. A better solution would be for this person to join a workshop where there is social contact with other people without the pressure of having to make small talk.
You might change a pattern of behavior with conscious determination. For the next few days, you will slide your left foot into the shoe before your right. Or you will purposefully fold your arms in a new manner. But after a few days, your natural preference takes over – your brain is after all trying to conserve energy.
So unless a habit is unhealthy and causing you and others harm, consider if it is really important to change your personality. There are simpler solutions to increase your opportunities for success than forcing yourself to be in environments you are not designed for.
