How to Beat Workplace Toxicity
Working in a toxic environment can quickly result in a decline in self-esteem and energy. If you are working in a workplace that is toxic – which is often characterized by gossip, politics, and negativity – here are some tips for coping:
This can be one of the hardest lessons, but it is one you must learn: you cannot control others; rather, you can only control yourself. This means accepting that you much be in control of your own reactions to others’ behaviors, and that you separate their negativity from your own self-worth.
Make it a Learning Experience
Also challenging to do, try to think of what you are going through as a learning experience and an opportunity for self-growth. For example, see how other people act and treat one another and determine that that is not who you want to be.
Conduct Yourself with Integrity
In some cases, there is nothing that you can do to change a toxic work environment. Instead of focusing on others and what you can do to fix them, focus on yourself and conducting yourself with integrity.
When you do, you’ll see that your energy improves and your personal success increases.
