How To Deal With Toxic Coworkers
We all have been in situations where letting off steam at work has helped us process a negative situation. What do you when a coworker takes it too far and cannot switch off the negativity?
Working with difficult people can be stressful and affects your productivity at work.
Venting about a stressful situation can be helpful if done right. We all need support when the going gets tough. But if your coworker takes a break from work every 15 minutes to whine and complain about something, it’s no longer in the realm of healthy venting.
How do you keep the grumbling at a minimum?
Create Healthy Boundaries With Toxic Coworkers
If you are constantly feeling negative and low after ending a conversation with a coworker, it’s time to draw a boundary.
Every time you see this person, you feel a weight on your chest. And when they leave, you feel a mixture of relief and at the same time you feel down.
Realize that you have to work with others in the office but you are not obliged to be friends with everyone. If you can, create a physical boundary so people understand that you are not available to talk during office hours. Shut the door or put on your headphones and stay focused on work.
Let others know that you have a lot to achieve during your work day and maintain a professional attitude towards conversations in the office.
Give them a chance to change the tone of their conversations and let them know that you will not tolerate gossip, negative talk, and constant complaints on company time.
The last thing you want to do is get your management involved. But with no other option, this last resort can work in your favor if handled with respect and a professional attitude.
