Balance Is Not The Midpoint Between Two Extremes

Finding the  balance between two extremes is often perceived as a healthy way of living.

A phrase often used in relation to employment is work-life balance. What happens when one takes greater precedence over the other?

The result of an imbalance is toxicity.

To avoid toxicity, it is important to reach that special place where all areas of your life are balanced.

How do you find balance in your life?

Harmony Begins With Self-Acceptance

Intolerance towards others is a reflection of our own failure to accept ourselves. When you get angry at someone for being a slow worker, it is often a manifestation of your inability to accept your own impatience.

When you cannot accept your whole self just as you are, toxic thoughts and behaviors begin to control your life.

You can either own the parts of your life that are still developing and embrace your flaws. Or, you can let your shadow self master your life.

A greater harmony and balance results when can integrate all aspects of our lives and accept ourselves without judgment.

Here are two steps to start finding a greater harmony in your life:

  1. Identify your shadow self (the beliefs, opinions, parts of your personality are are not proud of). Write them down.
  2. Write down a list of your superpowers (the things you feel proud about). This list signifies your gifts and what you are good at.

These are the two sides of the same coin. They represent you. Analyze the list without judgment.

Don’t think of them as strengths and weaknesses. Think of them as opportunities for you to grow.

Next, start making small changes.

Balance begins when you accept your life with all its coexisting tensions and contradictions. When you reach this place of understanding, you no longer see life as a battle between good and bad.

Rather, you see life as a dynamic force, constantly shifting and moving. And your balance is not something to chase after, it is finding peace in the chaos, serenity in the noise.
