Develop The Traits Of Positive Influence Leadership
Influence can either lift or drop the people around you.
It is far easier to change someone by inspiring them rather than forcing them to change their habits.
The concept of a lifestyle influencer is not new because there have always been those who teach others how to think, challenge them, and role-model excellence through their own example.
How can you develop such influence?
Developing influence is a 3 step process:
1. Influence Encourages People To Think
Who are the people who influenced you the most in your life? They most likely asked you a lot of questions and listened to you carefully.
To be an influencer, you need to ask people questions. And listen closely.
Get the people you lead to think differently by reframing their thoughts. With an open mind and calm tone, ask them probing questions, “Is this the best way to approach this situation…” or, “What makes you think that’s true?”
2. Challenge People To Grow
Have high expectations and challenge people around you to rise up to those expectations.
Praise them first. Find the best in people’s work and then raise the bar. Don’t ever tell people that their idea is dumb or their way is wrong. Praise them and then challenge them to find a better way.
And finally, do it in a way that makes the people around you feel respected, trusted, and inspired.
3. Influence Is Leading By Example
Example is leadership (according to Albert Schweitzer) and leadership is influence.
So, to have a positive influence on people, you need to lead by example.
Pick 2-3 people in your direct sphere of influence and ask yourself how you can be a better role model to them.
This is the beginning of developing influence.
