An old saying sums up our addictions, “Everything I like is illegal, immoral, or fattening.” We are constantly caught in a battle to do things that make us feel happy. Even if the happy feelings are short-lived. But everything that triggers fast happy chemicals in our body has side effects. And the happy feelings do not last long. So we go back to these short-term pleasurable activities to recreate the happy feelings. A vicious cycle of addiction results from seeking a constant high from theses activities.
Vicious cycles of addiction are all around us. They involve food, money, sex, alcohol, tobacco, and drugs. They might also involve internal thought patterns like approval seeking, escape, getting angry and thrill-seeking.
How do you break out these vicious cycles?
Resist The Vicious Cycle Of Addiction
Saying ‘no’ even once in the instant when you are tempted gives your brain to come up with an alternative.
Resisting the urge is extremely difficult and your body produces cortisol to fight for the easy fix. Although you are making the right choice, it starts to feel like your very existence is at threat.
If you go into relapse and give in to the urge, stop being harsh on yourself and simply restart the counter from day 1.
You won’t feel happy on day 1 or day 45. But if you stick with it, the pain of giving up the addiction subsides over time.
And instead, you are left with a habit of self-control and long-term benefits.
