According to a wealth of experience and research, empowering women has proven to be a game changer for nations around the world.
In the U.S. alone, the national income has increased by 5 percent after women started participating in the labor force. The numbers are much higher in Asian countries (about 27 percent in India and 9 percent in Japan).
Better opportunities for women tends to boost economic growth and creates a bigger pie for the entire economy. Given these statistics, it is no surprise that there is a strong push to promote economic equality and diversity in the workforce.
How can you encourage this positive trend?
Address The Gender Pay Gap
Women are generally hired at lower rates than their male counterparts. The usual excuse is that (especially young) women are likely to claim maternity benefits and may be less accessible to the organization because their attention is required at home after hours.
This is a tricky topic to approach. But when you have a willing workforce who are capable to adding an extra dimension to the smooth operations of a company, it seems unfair that these traditional excuses are still held on to firmly.
It’s time to change the rhetoric. Case studies from venture capital firms show that women entrepreneurs are more driven and likely to repay business loans in Africa and Asia.
Mentor Other Women
If you are a woman reading this, please be aware that younger women need your inspiration and encouragement. Share your story and if you are able to, help other women negotiate their way to fair wages and equal work opportunities.
