A high-impact action helps you to focus your energy on the most important actions that deliver the highest results. They are usually oriented towards achieving goals in the short-term.
These short-term goals need to point us in the direction of our end goal and should be actions that are completely under our control.
Pick 1-3 high-impact actions to take you closer to accomplishing your long-term goal. Keep the number low because our capacity to focus is inversely proportional to the number of areas we focus on.
Translate Your Mission Statement Into Action
Next, you need to start writing high-impact actions following from these two steps.
Keep these actions simple.
These measurable actions should aim to get you closer to your bigger goal by breaking the path into smaller chunks of time.
What Does A High-Impact Action Look Like?
From our previous example of a person aiming to be promoted to regional sales director, the following actions are high-impact and necessary to achieve the end goal:
- Promoting the team: Schedule 1-hour coaching sessions with each of the direct reports every week. Provide business guidance, track their progress, give helpful feedback and address their concerns. Organize regular off-site events to encourage team cohesion and to improve processes at work.
- Build relationships with senior management: Travel to other regional offices and meet with senior managers at least once every quarter. Use these meetings to strengthen relationships with other leaders and to improve cross-department communication.
- Improve leadership qualities: Practice leadership skills at every opportunity. Maintain a journal to note the reactions and responses to challenges at work and reflect on them. Be self-aware and present and work through blind spots with a business coach.
High-impact actions should be carried out daily, weekly, and monthly until they become part of your habit and routine. They also act as a benchmark to test if you are actually progressing towards achieving your goal.
